A recent midair collision near Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport resulted in 67 fatalities. An American Airlines jet, approaching for landing, collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter conducting a training mission. Preliminary investigations suggest the helicopter was flying over 100 feet higher than authorized, and its altitude may have been misreported to air traffic control. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, which could take up to a year. In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has restricted most helicopter flights near the airport. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has pledged to increase the number of air traffic controllers, citing concerns that staffing shortages may have contributed to the incident.
